Chad, this is your old friend Emily (Miller) who you haven't been in touch with in 10+ years! I just got my Beatles Rock Band in the mail today and it made me think of you and how great you rocked those Beatles songs back in high school! Shoot me an e-mail and I'll give you a link to my blog so we can catch up! It is Gmail -- emilym56

I would have just sent you a Facebook Friend request, but apparently you don't have a profile there. Bah!

I think its fair to say that TDD usually helps but is a means rather than an end. One of the side benefits of TDD is that it usually means that the developer has to take a step back from the code itself and crystalise their thinking in the form of unit tests first. This means that when they write their real code, this then this is at least the second time that they have had to think about what they are doing.

Do you think that Test Driven Development helps in reducing Technical Debt while still allowing you to meet deadlines? In my limited experience with TDD it seems to make a difference. I think the main overhead with TDD is learning how to write good test, which in the beginning may take some time, but once you get the hang of it, it certainly reduces errors ,encourages solid design, and keeps you focused. What do you think?

Good point about the Technical Debt. A project has no value when it has no future. When the failure to meet a critical deadline would result in the termination of a project, then the choice to cut whatever corners in order to meet that deadline is obvious. What is missing from view to the project's stakeholders is that the intangible value/potential has been compromised.

Its that intangibility that is the real trouble.

Be sure to keep your Design Patterns book close!

Seeing that you've got some experience programming, you'll certainly go through the design and architecture phase before jumping into coding, right?

Let's see your UML diagrams!

Thanks bey0ndy0nder for the advice, suggestions, and encouragement.

I think I want to start from the ground up by developing a little 2D game for fun. After that I think I will look into some of the available game engines. I'd like to play around with Havoc for sure, and I have seen Ogre before but don't know anything about it.

If you have any other suggestions or advice, let me know about them. Also, as I post problems, feel free to give solutions.

What sort of computer games are looking to make? You can either develop your own game (with the right tools of course), or you can make mod...They are both making games but sort of different.

The advantages of making a MOD is you are given a nice engine and framework to work with, but the downside is you are bounded in this framework. That is, if you are looking to make say a space combat game the unreal 3 engine may not be the right choice.

The other route is coding your own. There are various tools out there to make you life easier. Using say a 3D engine (you can use it for 2D games too) such as Ogre is awesome... Sure, you are still using an engine someone else made but these engines are very open-ended. They are made with different types of games in mind. Most of them are open-source so you can extend as much as you want.

Then there is also the question of learning curve. Making a 2d game is much easier than 3d game. But there are a lot of tools out there they will really make your life easier, such as physics engines etc...

Good luck man.
